Our family is still dealing with the Egypt issues. My parents got home to Springfield, Illinois only after being stuck in Chicago for two days because of weather and then their plane slid off the runway in Springfield and they were stuck in a snow drift for hours. They eventually got the passengers off the plane but they couldn't get to the luggage compartment until the following day. We just had to laugh. Can you believe after all that, they are trying to get clearance to get back into Egypt! It is a crazy world we live in.
They say timing is everything and our family can attest for that. I have been toying with the idea of getting another lung transplant for some time. As you all know, I have been in rejection for many years, at least six, and have noticed more decline over the last several months. We have met with the surgeon and last week got the "green light" as far as being a good candidate for re-transplant. The catch is that I also need a kidney transplant. The anti-rejection drugs are very hard on the kidneys and they know I will be hit hard with these drugs just after the lung transplant. They are certain the kidneys will poop out shortly after surgery.
The plan is to do the lung transplant first and then the kidney transplant after my old ones poop out. (That way I will be damaging the bad ones and not the new kidney when the anti-rejection drugs are so strong.) The kidney transplant could take place a month after surgery or a year after but we will be ready for whenever. I will not get on the official lung transplant waiting list until we have my kidney donor lined up and all of the testing on me and them done. Once I get on the lung transplant list, they expect it to take just a few months to be transplanted. It will go relatively quick.
In the meantime, my mother has flown down to Florida to be worked up as a donor and also help take care of me. It has been such a blessing that she had to come home early and kind of nice that Egypt is not ready for her either.
