Fact: Orchards= slave labor to children.
Fact: I don't really care much for raw apples. The orchard didn't help the situation but more than that, apples always make me cough. Not just a little cough, the kind of cough that you cannot stop and you think your just going to loose a lung. So apples and I, not that good of friends.
Backing up about five months, for mother's day, our ward gave the women these bags full of taffy. Don and I were devoring them on our way home from church when I started into a coughing attack. Sure enough I ate an apple flavored taffy piece.
Fact: Did you know apples are a common food allergy? In all these years, I never put two and two together. Dr. Don had to point out the obvious.
So from mother's day on, I have been a little wiser to the allergy issue. It should be noted, the cough only comes on when I eat them raw, some types of apples are worse (red delicious) than others and I think if I remove the skin, I'm okay. Cooked, no problems. Love apple sauce and apple juice and once a year demand a carmel apple. This does cause me to cough, but the carmel tames it somehow.
So now that you know more than you cared to about my apple diet restrictions, I discovered a gem at, of all places, my local Walmart. I grabbed some apples for Don's lunches and he mentioned the next day how good his apple tasted. So I went back and bought him several more. (They are called Honey Crisp and they are huge.)
About a week ago, I got up at 3 am to take care of a low blood sugar. I don't know why, but I decided to grab one of those Honey Crisp apples. I don't even like apples and I was totally consumed with this little piece of heaven! This apple was that good. I kept opening up cupbords and raveging through the fridge looking for perfect combinations to merge with this apple flavor. Like I'm Racheal Ray, right?
So now I've got the countertop covered with items like honey, peanut butter, apricot jelly, granola bars, pretzels, I looked for the carmel but didn't have any, you get the point. So now the plot thickens because in walks Don to ask me what I'm doing. I knew I had to come clean so I told him, "I'm having a love affair in my kitchen at 3 am with this apple!"
Fact: We both got a good laugh.
My cute husband helped me put away my treats and we went back to bed. He went back to bed. I started in on my coughing attack and thought of how I could make something incredible with that apple. For real, the cough was even worth it.
Alas, I have nothing. Nothing ingenous. Any ideas? I did make Don an apple crisp for his birthday... But that's for another blog.

Honey Crisps are my newest favorite apple, and I LOVE apples. You're so right...they are THE BEST. Go to thepioneerwoman.com and type apple into her page search. I'm sure all the recipes are great, but the Apple Dumplings are so, SOOOOOooooo yummy! Probably more fat and sugar than we should ever consume, but indulge just once. Or Twice. Fact: I'm addicted. Although I only indulge a few times a year. Can't wait until Thanksgiving :)
Ok, you've convinced me to give the Honeycrisp apple a try. My sister in law was raving about them, but I don't love apples, so I've never had one. She even planted a honeycrisp apple tree in her yard, she loved them so much.
I am going to get myself a honeycrisp apple when I go shopping this week and I will report back!
Interesting about the coughing, my other sister in law is allergic to apples, they make her whole mouth swell up. Funny story: my grandma's funeral and my sister in law was starving because it was a loooong day. Anyway, someone had an apple and she just ate it because she was so hungry, and you can guess what happened by the time we got to the cemetery. Oh boy. I had no idea you could be allergic to apples, I thought they were just a tame little fruit. Think again I guess!
